Does the PS3 Disc still read? (While playing off of External)

Does the ps3 disc still read when you load a game off of multiman via external? Meaning do you hear the ps3 disc running exactly as it would when you play a normal ps3 game? Im trying to play discless because i dont want to stress or use my ps3 disc drive but my dlc doesn't read when i play games discless...
