PS3 won't play retail disc or back ups

I just recently got back into the PS3 scene after having a PS3 with 3.55 KMEAW on it way back when that was new. I installed 3.55OFW on a friend's PS3 and then 3.55KMEAW and then updated to 4.40 Rogero 1.03 as described in the tutorial thread. All went well and I installed mM and things as they should. So I insert the cheapest game I could buy (brand new from Wal-Mart) NBA 07 HD and the first time I put it in it works fine until I try to play a quick match where the game freezes at a loading screen and the music begins to skip. So I flip the power switch on the back of the machine and turn it back on. It will no longer load the retail disc at all and sometimes won't even recognize that the disc has been inserted. The light on the front turns blue but the XMB does not indicate that a game is inserted. So I downloaded and FTPd Deus Ex: Human Revolution to the proper location and I cannot start it either even if the PS3 recognizes that a game is inserted first. I just get a black screen or an error message saying the game could not be started. My only guess at this point is the BD drive is shot and won't read the game correctly. does anyone know if I've done anything wrong or missed a step somewhere?

EDIT: Turning on BD Mirror and removing the retail disc from the drive allows Deus Ex to start successfully. I guess this backs up my assumption that the BD drive needs replaced.

EDIT 2: Deus Ex gets to the installation screen and hangs at 81%. What's the deal with that?
