I'm playing The Last of Us (modded console, "backup" copy of the game); the console is connected via ethernet to the modem, and as far as I know it's not connected to any official network (PSN) and the system updates are turned OFF in the settings of the console.
When I launch the game I receive a pop-up message saying that there is a title update (1.02) for this game available. First I declined the message (the game launched just fine), but then I was curious and tried the "unofficial" title update feature of Multiman; it didn't find any title update.
So I'm a bit worried about two things. First, is my PS3 really offline? I'm wondering, because if it's not connected to an official network it shouldn't know that there's a title update available...or should it?
And second and most important, is it safe to accept downloading a title update when a pop-up message like that shows up? Have there been cases of "trojan horses" of modded-console-bricking title updates?
