Rambo: The Video Game Aniticipation

Rambo: The Video Game is an on-rails shooter with some stealth and some cover-shooter elements that sounds like it might actually be fun, if only because it looks absolutely preposterous and cheesy.

The game basically puts you in the shoes of John Rambo through the films First Blood 1 and 2 and Rambo 3. It even has rights to the voice-tracks of Sylvester Stallone from those films. So you won’t actually have Stallone voice-acting for the games, but you’ll get little tidbits of his voice from the movies.

Publisher Reef Entertainment describes the game as a rail-shooter with both cover and spray-shooting elements, similar to old-school arcade games. Cover can be shredded; throats can be stabbed with knives. There are both first and third-person sequences. Even stealth will play a part.

Oh, and there are QTEs.

“Where we could we went for authenticity first and foremost,” Reef Entertainment’s Will Curley told VG24/7. “For example we initially had Rambo shooting his way out of the police-station as we had well developed shoot-out mechanics and it was fun to destroy the police-station from inside. However we replaced it with a 3rd person QTE fight sequence that is more true to the films.

“The sequence is shorter but it definitely adds to the experience of the game. One thing fans wanted was more third-person scenes which is obviously difficult today without building a whole new animation and control system for the game, so QTE and mo-cap works great as a substitute, and as you can imagine mo-cap also gives us the best opportunity for accuracy to the films.”

In fairness, while I grabbed this quotation because I hold a deep loathing for Quick Time Events (QTEs) many of Curley’s responses in the VG24/7 piece illustrate that a real thoughtfulness has gone into what sort of shooter Reef and developer Teyon wanted to make.

But as with so many movies-turned-video game, Rambo looks like a dubious venture.

I am looking forward too this, big rambo fan growing up
