New hard drive wont work gets stuck at 99% update

i have a hard drive from a computer that broke its 360GB i know it works because i was able to retrieve the data off of it with a sata to usb
i do not have the sata to usb any more so i am unable to reformat the drive before putting it in to the ps3
can any one help me with this because i still only have an 80gb hard drive in my ps3
